Fractal Heater optimizes exhaust gas purification in the cold-start phase

- Purem by Eberspaecher expands the Active Heating product family

- New heating component ensures rapid heat up of the catalytic converter

- Flexible integration in exhaust gas purification systems

Esslingen, 24 June 2021 – Further improved exhaust gas purification is a central building block for the clean mobility of tomorrow. There is great potential in the cold-start phase. Purem by Eberspaecher has its Active Heating product family in place for this purpose. A new member of this product group is the Fractal Heater. It is suitable for exhaust gas aftertreatment in Diesel and gasoline-powered vehicles with 48 V electrical systems. By significantly reducing pollutants, the component contributes to meet the limit values of upcoming emission standards such as Euro 7.

The Fractal Heater is an electric heating component that increases the efficiency of exhaust gas purification in the cold-start phase and low-load cycles. The newly developed heating elements ensure rapid heat transfer to the downstream catalytic converter. The required operating temperature is thus reached in the shortest possible time. If necessary, the Fractal Heater will heat up the exhaust gas purification system before the engine even starts. This can significantly reduce emissions at the start of the journey. In tests, an up to 90 percent reduction in pollutants could be achieved as a result.

Can be used in many ways
The Fractal Heater’s flexible construction makes it scalable in size, shape, and performance. The component offers a high heat output of up to 6.5 kW for passenger car applications in a small installation space. These features facilitate customer-specific adaptations and make the solution interesting for almost all vehicle segments and a wide spectrum of exhaust gas purification systems. The Fractal Heater can be used with metal and ceramic catalytic converters. Since the exhaust-emission conversion component is electrically operated, no additional fuel in combination with an ignition source is required. On request, Eberspaecher supplies the Fractal Heater as a coordinated overall system with the in-house-developed electrical control unit (ECU) for individual control and monitoring of the heating function. The newest member of the Active Heating product family will be available as standard starting in 2024.

Active Heating Solutions
As early as January 2021, Purem by Eberspaecher presented its first product in the innovative Active Heating product family: the catalytically coatable EHC Lamella Heater. With its product strategy, the automotive supplier is pursuing clean and quiet mobility. To achieve this, the company combines its expertise in exhaust gas purification, thermal management, and automotive controls. Across divisions, reliable components are therefore created that help automobile manufacturers comply with current and future emission standards. Active Heating Solutions shorten the cold-start phase at the beginning of the journey and increase the temperature in low-load cycles. This is because the chemical processes of exhaust gas purification only take place once a defined minimum temperature has been reached.
