Purem by Eberspächer — Exhaust Technologies for Clean and Quiet Mobility

- Exhaust Technology Division of the Group becomes ‘Purem by Eberspächer’

- Technologies for clean and quiet mobility

- Realignment facilitates cooperation with other companies

Esslingen, 19 May 2021 – Moving forward, the Eberspaecher Group’s Exhaust Technology Division will operate as the ‘Purem by Eberspächer’ brand. The automotive supplier is thus strengthening the operational independence of the area and expanding opportunities for global cooperation with other companies. Eberspaecher remains the owner of the subsidiary.

“We are currently experiencing major changes in the automotive industry and the global economy, so we are therefore taking a proactive approach,” says Martin Peters, Managing Partner of the Eberspaecher Group, in explaining this strategic direction. For the supplier industry, Eberspaecher expects consolidation — particularly with respect to mature markets and products — in which global alliances will increasingly emerge. With this in mind, the Division with the highest revenues within the Group of Companies is being given more latitude in their business operations. In 2020, Eberspaecher’s Exhaust Technology Division generated revenue of around 4.4 billion euros. Eberspaecher remains the owner of the ‘Purem by Eberspächer’ subsidiary and will rely on its tried-and-tested management. Dr. Thomas Waldhier, who has headed the automotive supplier’s Exhaust Technology business since 2012, will continue to be responsible for operational management. Looking ahead, Dr. Waldhier says: “We are specifically pooling our forces to make it easier for us to cooperate with other companies in the future. In this way, we are playing an active role in market consolidation.”

Growth in the Group of Companies from the core business
“Eberspaecher successfully operates in various markets and thus offers a very broad product portfolio. With the new brand, we will represent this in a more organizationally differentiated way moving forward,” says Martin Peters, explaining the transformation and positioning of the Eberspaecher Group. The goal remains to continue expanding out from the core of the company. “Purem by Eberspaecher serves as a strong pillar in our Group of Companies. In the future, the brand will generate funds for further developing both the exhaust aftertreatment systems and international presence, as well as for growing new business areas and technologies,” adds Peters.

Products to meet future emission standards
The aim of Purem by Eberspaecher is to make a significant contribution to the clean and quiet mobility of today and tomorrow. After all, optimized combustion engines and alternative drives will play an important role in the mobility transition that is about to take place. The portfolio includes exhaust and acoustic systems for passenger cars, CVs and off-road vehicles that help improve air quality and reduce noise. To meet future emissions standards, the company is already working on solutions for the automotive industry. A key component is the upcoming Euro 7 standard to further reduce emission levels. One focus of research is the possibility of bringing the exhaust-system branch up to operating temperature immediately after engine startup. This is because a large proportion of pollutant emissions occur during the cold-start phase. The first product developed for this purpose is the EHC Lamella Heater. It preheats the exhaust-system branch separately. With this and subsequent developments from the Active Heating Solutions product group, Purem by Eberspaecher is positioning itself as a key supplier for the next generation of exhaust emission conversion. For global standards such as EPA Tier 3, China 6, or Bharat VI, the company also manufactures state-of-the-art systems. With components that also reduce weight or fuel consumption and thus CO2 emissions, the Esslingen-based company is consistently working toward the clean mobility of tomorrow.

Many years of experience in exhaust aftertreatment systems and a global presence
Purem by Eberspaecher can rely on many years of expertise and successful customer relationships. Exhaust Technology is the Eberspaecher Group’s traditional core business. The company has been developing and producing increasingly complex exhaust systems since the 1930s. Today, around 7,000 employees work for Purem by Eberspaecher at more than 40 manufacturing and development sites. Exhaust technology components and complete systems are developed and tested for international automobile manufacturers at the three research and development centers in Esslingen, Novi (USA), and Shanghai (China). Production takes place in around 30 plants on four continents. Recently, a plant in Mexico commenced operations. There have also been recent expansions in India and China, with just-in-sequence production facilities for direct local customer deliveries. In order to make its innovations available to a broad market as quickly as possible, Purem by Eberspaecher relies on modern development and production methods. The entire company processes are largely digitized. Virtual product and process development methods as well as Simultaneous Engineering are used for the products of tomorrow.
