High Voltage Electrical Water Heater: On-demand heating in electric buses

- Quick temperature control of internal space or vehicle battery

- Higher range thanks to continuous output control

- Modularity allows combination of several heaters

Esslingen (Germany), 26 November, 2024 – Drive concepts using electricity and hydrogen are in demand to make local public transport sustainable. With the new High Voltage Electrical Water Heater, Eberspaecher is launching a new water heater for electric buses that combines range and comfort. The robust device enables fast and efficient conversion of electricity into heat. Its modular combination of several heating units and stepless output control are particularly impressive.

From hydrogen buses and coaches to trolleybuses, the High Voltage Electrical Water Heater heats all types of buses with a purely electric or hybrid drive. The stepless control via a percentage signal enables the internal space to be heated quickly for passengers and allows sparing battery conditioning without energy loss. Preheating the battery in winter speeds up the charging process and noticeably extends the range. The resistance heater has a voltage range of 500 to 820 volts DC for large electric vehicles. With an output of 10 kW, the heater warms the passenger compartment and driver's cab or conditions the vehicle battery. The robust design of the product guarantees trouble-free operation throughout its service life. The water heater is now available as standard.

Modular expansion as required
The design of the product allows the combination of up to three heaters with a maximum total output of 30 kW. They can be installed compactly next to each other and allow space-saving modular use. Connection to a fuel operated heater, such as the Hydronic, is also possible. Depending on the model, this water heater can be operated with HVO without any further adjustments, as is already common in northern EU countries. The fuel is made from hydrogenated vegetable oils and reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 90 percent compared to fossil diesel. The Hydronic M2 offers between 8 and 12 kW of additional power, while the larger Hydronic L3 delivers 16 to 45 kW. In cold seasons, switching on such a device conserves the battery and extends operating scope.

User-friendly operation and maintenance
The High Voltage Electrical Water Heater can be diagnosed via error codes. The device can be controlled via a CAN bus interface with various control systems, including Eberspaecher E-Control. Maximum user-friendliness and an extensively customizable range of functions make this the perfect control element for all thermal management components in the bus. In addition, E-Control enables the device to be integrated with e-connected, the company's cloud-based digital service platform.
