The future starts green

Eberspächer is committed to implementing measures both large and small to reduce its carbon footprint – whether in the use of resources, the sustainability of its products, or in its collaboration with customers. One of its key focuses is the use of sustainable materials.

4 February 2026 – Sustainable innovations: By using CO2-reduced stainless steel and strong teamwork, Eberspächer is shaping the mobility of tomorrow in a responsible and climate-friendly way. The pilot project at the Wilsdruff site shows how it can be done.

RESOURCE-SAVING MATERIALS

Eberspächer is pursuing a wide range of measures to promote greater responsibility throughout the entire value chain: from resource-saving practices and forward-looking products to close cooperation with customers for an optimized supply chain. As part of a pilot project in 2025, the focus at the Purem by Eberspächer Wilsdruff plant was on the use of CO2-reduced stainless steel. There, a production line for exhaust gas aftertreatment systems for a well-known car manufacturer was converted to “Circle Green,” a virtually CO2-neutral steel variant from the Finnish company Outokumpu. This reduces emissions per produced exhaust system by around 30 percent, resulting in annual savings of over 8,000 tons of CO2. What remains unchanged? The high quality standards for all Eberspächer products.

TEAMWORK AND OPTIMIZED SUPPLY CHAIN

The success is based on cross-departmental cooperation: Purchasing and sales worked hand in hand with Outokumpu to enable the switch to CO2-reduced steel. The intensive partnerships with customers and suppliers, as well as the precise coordination of all procurement and production processes, were crucial. Roy Juch, who was intensively involved in the project at the site in Saxony as the person responsible for global purchasing of raw materials, explains: "In practice, we were faced with a very complex sequence in which all procurement activities had to be precisely coordinated. From purchasing and allocation to our suppliers to the on-time delivery of individual parts and components to the production plant – an optimized supply chain is essential for on-time delivery. In order to integrate the new material into the operational control system, the individual steps along the supply chain had to be precisely coordinated. The conversion of all customer-related materials on our production lines in Wilsdruff is clear proof of the excellent cooperation between all departments involved." By the end of 2025, 90 percent of the most common steel grades on the production line had been converted. The produced exhaust gas aftertreatment systems are used in medium- and heavy-duty vehicles, buses, and construction machinery on the European market.

„We are working consistently towards our goal of achieving CO2-neutral production by 2030 and becoming a CO2-neutral company by 2040 – for future generations, for the mobility of tomorrow, and for the coming decades as a family business.“

CO2 NEUTRALITY BY 2040

Jörg Steins, CEO of Purem by Eberspächer and Eberspächer, emphasizes: “We are working consistently towards our goal of achieving CO2-neutral production by 2030 and becoming a CO2-neutral company by 2040 – for future generations, for the mobility of tomorrow, and for the coming decades as a family business.” The use of Circle Green is an important step towards reducing Scope 3 emissions. This includes all indirect greenhouse gas emissions that are not directly caused by Eberspächer but are attributable to its own business activities. “In order to achieve our goal of becoming a climate-neutral company by 2040, we see the procurement of steel with the lowest possible CO2 footprint as one of the greatest opportunities for reducing these emissions,” explains Steins.
