How a catalytic converter works
The Eberspächer three-way catalytic converter converts more than 90% of the toxic combustion residues that arise with the petrol engine into substances compatible with the environment: carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxide are converted to carbon dioxide, nitrogen, oxygen and water vapour.
This conversion takes place catalytically using precious metals (platinum, palladium, rhodium) with which as many as 8,000 channels of the ceramic or metal monoliths in the catalytic converter are coated.
The entire catalytically effective surface of a passenger car catalytic converter corresponds to the area of 5 football fields.
